Post-Suspension: NPF MLAs seek to ensure stability of govt

Demand for leadership change can only be made through appropriate forum: Kiyanielie

DIMAPUR, JUNE 1 (MExN): A joint meeting of the NPF legislators holding offices and senior party functionaries at the State Banquet Hall, Kohima has resolved to fully endorse the decision of the Disciplinary Action Committee (DAC) and the subsequent orders issued by party president, Dr Shurhozelie Liesietsu in serving suspension orders to Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio and MLA Imkong L. Imchen from the party’s primary and active membership till further orders.

A press statement from NPF Legislature Party spokesperson, Yitachu on June 1 said the house at the meeting held that the decision was taken in the best interest of the party and also to ensure the stability of the NPF-led DAN Government.

Furthermore, the meeting resolved to reiterate its unflinching support to the leadership of party president Dr Shurhozelie Liezietsu and Chief Minister TR Zeliang.

The meeting also reiterated its full support to the peace talks and to strive all out for an early and permanent settlement, which is acceptable and honourable to the Nagas.

Meanwhile, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kiyanielie Peseyie on Wednesday said demand in change of leadership within the party cannot be termed as anti-party activities, only if, such a demand is made within the four walls of appropriate party forum.

The Minister, while reacting to statements from suspended NPF members on the issue of anti-party activities, maintained that demand for leadership change should be made through appropriate party forum such as the CEC of the party, or NPF Parliamentary Party, and not in public forum or through the media.

“When party legislators have decided who the leader would be and when a duly elected leader is at the helm of affairs, repeated attempts to de-stabilise the party-led Government and attempts to divide the party set-up by organising concentration-like camps for the dissatisfied party MLAs can only be termed and considered as anti-party activity, and no political party in the democratic world will ever condone such activities,” the Minister asserted.

Maintaining that all political parties are governed by the party constitution, and the Government too, is run within the ambit of the laws and the Constitution of India, the Minister therefore said no legislator or party functionary is above the law and the Constitution.

By practice and tradition, if anyone crosses the limits, show cause notices are served to them, and if replies or/clarifications are satisfactory, or apologies made for misdeeds, there are always provisions and ways and means for reconsideration, the Minister said.

He however pointed out that if anyone openly challenges the established party system, the only option left for the party leadership is to take disciplinary action- “And such action, such as suspension orders served, is not to be taken to the public domain for debate and discussion in the marketplace because such an action, in itself, is an anti-party activity.”

On the directive that legislators inform the Chief Minister of their movements from the capital, the Parliamentary Affairs Minister defended that this was done in order to curb unnecessary expenditure due to uncontrolled movement of the Ministers, Advisors and Parliamentary Secretaries both within and outside the State.

Further, the Minister said this would ensure discipline as well as to ensure that they do not go out of station for trivial matters.
