Potted Fever: Ukhrul Flower Festival

  Newmai News Network Ukhrul | October 26 The three-day Annual Ukhrul Flower Festival kicked off today at Town Hall in Ukhrul district headquarters. The event is organised by Ukhrul Flower Society (UFS).   Flower show, exhibition cum sale of flowers, organic vegetables and fruits, local foods and cuisines, processed food items and local handicrafts are some of the prominent features of the festival. A large number of flower farmers from various villages of Ukhrul district are participating in the festival, which will culminate on October 28.   This year's flower festival is being held under the theme, "Potted Fever".   According to Artax Shimray, Advisor of Ukhrul Flower Society, he has requested the State Government to frame a policy for floriculture so that various welfare schemes can be implemented apart from providing livelihood to the people. Artax Shimray also said that many medicinal plants and ornamental plants found in Ukhrul district can be sold commercially to generate income. He also urged the concerned department to provide training programs.   Inaugurating the festival, Manipur Horticulture and Soil Conservation minister, Thounaojam Shyamkumar expressed his concern over the decreasing forest cover in the Ukhrul district. He appealed to the people of the Ukhrul district to plant more trees to increase forest cover.   Stating that the State Government of Manipur is committed to help the people of Ukhrul district by availing the benefits of various welfare programs, he said the State Government also needs cooperation from the people. He said the flower society should find a suitable location such as a hillock, where flowers can be planted and develop it as a flower park. He opined that the flower park can add to the scenic beauty of Ukhrul and attract tourists in the area.   Shyamkumar then assured that he will consult officials of the departments under him so that welfare projects can be taken in the district apart from the ongoing projects.
