Pre-conception & pre-natal diagnostic technique awareness campaign held

Wokha, December 16 (MExN): An awareness programme on “Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994 (PCPNDT)” under Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) activities was held at Tiyi Town Hall Wokha Town on December 14. The programme was organized by the District Administration Wokha in collaboration with Medical Department Wokha. Resource persons of the programme were Dr Nounenuo Terhase MO (Obs & Gyn) DMMDH and Shanchobeni Khuvung WDLSA, stated a press release from Media Officer, NHM. Resource person Dr Nounenuo spoke on the brief history of the inception and importance of PNDT provision Act. She stated that prior to the Act, USG machine were being abused and it became a booming business in the market with rapid growth of sex selection leading to foeticide. To end all this malpractices the PNDT ACT 1994, came into being and thereby included provisions of prohibition of sex selection before or after conception, detecting genetic abnormalities or metabolic disorders or chromosomal abnormalities or certain congenital malformations or sex-linked disorders and prevention of misuse of sex determination. She also spoke on teenage pregnancy and cancer of the cervix which is one of the major issues pertaining to women’s health. WDLSA Shanchobeni spoke on the offences, penalties and punishments pertaining to the Act citing the Indian Penal Code (Section 312-318), PNDT Act 1994, its amendment in 2003, and the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (MTP) Act. Thungdeno PD (DRDA) Wokha also spoke on importance of education in girl child’s life to build her future and enabling her to enjoy equal status. The programme was chaired by Dr Tumchobeni MS DMMDH Wokha. Keynote address was given by Dr Khelito Zhimomi DIO Wokha. The programme was attended by Lotha Eloe Hoho, Village Council Chairmans, ASHAs, Teachers and CMO staffs Wokha.
