Pre-poll violence at Chungtia

Pre-poll violence erupted at Chungtia village under 28 Koridang Assembly Constituency between supporters of rival candidates here today. Eight people were injured; two with bullet wounds – in the abdomen and one in the leg – while others had additional injuries inflicted from blunt objects. All the injured persons are admitted at IMDH, Mokokchung. All of them are out of danger, said a doctor at IMDH.  

Mokokchung SP, Raguramarajan, disclosed that the violence between the supporters of the rival parties erupted at around 2:00 pm on Saturday. He did not specify which ‘parties’ but said that eight persons has also been arrested in this connection. The SP said that the two platoons of security forces deployed at Chungtia village led by Mokokchung SDPO intervened and brought the situation under control. The situation at Chungtia village, as per the words of the police officer, is “under control.” He nonetheless said that Section 144 CrPC has now been clamped at the village ‘twenty-four seven’. Earlier it was only from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.  

28 Koridang A/C has three candidates – Imkong L Imchen (NPF), C Lima Imchen (NDPP) and T Chalukumba Ao (NPP).  

The Mokokchung SP appealed, as well as warned, the public not to spread rumours through social media about election related matters. He warned that strict action will be taken against those who “spread rumors” through social media apps like Whatsapp, Facebook etc under appropriate section of the IPC.  

So far as per police records, more than 27 people have been arrested, one killed and more than Rs. 10 lakh worth of liquor seized in poll related matters under Mokokchung district so far.
