'Prices in Dimapur tripled due to illegal taxes'

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 11 (MExN): The Public Action Committee (PAC) of the Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) today stated that illegal taxes have caused the prices of every product in Dimapur’s market to triple.

In a letter to the Nagaland State Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio, the PAC said that it has conducted a study on the ground realities prevailing in the commercial market of Nagaland i.e. Dimapur, which has resulted in “baffling” findings.

“lt is found that from the smallest product to the biggest, illegal tax is being collected at every point of transaction. A product from the entry point to godown to retail is illegally taxed, which triples the price of every product,” it stated.

The PAC said that the living costs of the citizens have been greatly affected as there is no price regulation due to illegal tax collections.

It informed that the PAC with the help and support of the Police Department has been trying to contain the activities of illegal collectors by means of apprehending such criminals.

“However, to our utter dismay, it is found that, while the executive forces perform their duties by apprehending criminals, the judiciary grants bail to the criminals without any difficulty. This has greatly demoralized the Police forces (executive) to effectively and sincerely perform their duty,” the PAC lamented.

It urged that the judicial process and rule of law must be strengthened to protect and safeguard the public. The PAC hoped that the Chief Minister would understand these grievances and intervene.
