Students and civil society organisations have intensified their protests against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill today in Imphal.
Even as the All Manipur Student Union (AMSU) responded to the call of the North East Student Organisation (NESO) to hoist black flag today, other student organisations such as Democratic Student Alliance of Manipur (DESAM), Manipuri Student Federation (MSF), Kangleipak Student Association (KSA) organised a joint protest today against the passing of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

In another protest, All Manipur United Club Organisation (AMUCO) in collaboration with several other organisations held a sit-in-protest in Imphal today. Later, they marched towards the Chief Minister’s bungalow. The police personnel in large number foiled the rally when the protestors were about to reach the Chief Minister’s bungalow.

Speaking to media persons on the sideline of the protest, Ph Deban, President of AMUCO, alleged that the passing of the Bill is “a ploy of the Government of India to annihilate the indigenous people of the North East”. He also stated that the people of Manipur will continue to fight tooth and nail against the Bill.

Meanwhile, security measures have been elaborately taken up by the state government even as the situation is getting worse by the day in the state capital Imphal following the passing of the Bill. It is expected that the protest against the Bill will even get intensified more in the next few days’ time as the people are becoming agitated by the move of the Centre with regard to the Bill.
