Protests in Manipur as Police kill teacher

Newmai News Network Imphal | April 25   Even as issues relating to extra judicial killing continue to haunt trouble-torn Manipur, a police constable reportedly shot dead a school teacher late last night in Thoubal district which triggered a total blockade along the Imphal-Moreh road since this morning.   Infuriated by the incident, locals of the deceased native hometown also burnt down the house of the accused at Ukhongsang Mamang Leikai, Thoubal district. The dead body of the school teacher is still lying at the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Instittute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal till the filing of this report as the victim’s family refused to claim the body unless the accused policeman is given a capital punishment.   Reports said that, during a Thabal Chongba programme (literally translated as dancing by moonlight where participants join hands and dance in circular pattern) some policemen in civvies asked the gamblers (dice/Lagao) to wrap up the game. However, the gambling continued even as the police personnel returned a second time in uniform.   An exchange of words reportedly followed between the gamblers and the security force personnel. In the process, a police constable whipped out his service weapon and opened fire where a bullet hit the stomach of the school teacher identified as one Khangembam Santosh Singh, 25 years old, of Thoubal Athokpam Awang Leikai. He was rushed to Thoubal District Hospital but succumbed to the wound, reports said.   The deceased was teaching at Institute of Rural Education, Wangjing. The accused policeman, identified as one Elangbam Rajesh, 30, is now in police custody.   Meanwhile, reports emerging portrayed a very tense situation prevailing in the area. As a pre-emptive measure, the district administration has enforced measures for adequate security.
