'Public curfew' paralyses life in Imphal

Imphal, July 30 (NNN): Normal life was disrupted in the state due to a 24-hour 'public curfew' called by the Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS) protesting police "excesses."

Vehicles were off the road, all markets remained shut and all government and private establishments suspended normal activities. Inter-state and inter-district passenger services were cancelled owing to the shutdown call. All educational institutes were closed for the day due to the strike which kicked off last midnight.   No unwanted incidents were reported during the bandh called after police dispersed a public meeting near Singjamei bride here yesterday.   The meet was organised by a JAC against 'criminalisation' of former convenor of JCILPS,  Ratan Khomdram who is wanted by the police on the charge of having links with the outlawed United National Liberation Front (UNLF).   The police had dispersed the meeting after a makeshift hall was being pulled down and threw into Imphal river. Joint Committee convenor BK Moirancha condemned the alleged police excesses committed against the public. He said, "The incident was a challenged to the public."   The JAC along with JCILPS have demanded that the government drop the wanted tag against Ratan Khomdram.
