Public rally held in Mizoram as people revive demand for district

AIZAWL, JULY 31 (NNN): A large number of people braving sun and rain carried out a rally today under the aegis of Saitual District Implementing Demand Committee (SDIDC) at Saitual town in Mizoram demanding the implementation of Saitual as a full-fledged district.   The creation of Saitual district was announced by the Mizo National Front (MNF) led state government on September 12, 2008 along with two other districts- Hnathial and Khawzawl. However, the new districts have not been made functional till date under the Congress led State government.   The rally was joined by over a thousand people. All vehicles stayed off the road during the rally, sources said.   According to SDIDC Chairman Rohmingliana, the people of Saitual town area have been patiently waiting for the implementation of Saitual as district headquarter since 2008 but it has not been made fully functional till date.   “The government paid a deaf ear to the peaceful way of demanding the implementation of Saitual district which was promised in 2008 and again in 2013 assembly elections. Therefore, the NGOs are forced to stage peaceful rally,” he said.   To show their support to the demand for implementation of Saitual district, Saitual Town Youth Organisation (STYO) and four villages NGOs within Saitual town area viz. Sihfa, Rulchawn, Ruallung and Keifang and Aizawl Saitual Welfare also held demonstration in Aizawl today.   Addressing a demonstration here, STYO President and Saitual Welfare Committee, Aizawl Chairman V.L. Krosshnehzova said the creation of Saitual district was announced by MNF government in 2008. After this, Congress promised to implement the newly declared district before state assembly elections in 2008 and again in 2013, he added.   SDIDC appealed to the state government to immediately implement Saitual as a district headquarter and said that if their non-violence form of appeal remains unanswered then they will be forced to resort to violence.   The demand to formally make Saitual, Khawzawl and Hnathial as new district headquarters had gained momentum since 2008 after Congress came to power. The declaration, even though was made formally in 2008, no administrative offices have been set up in these places till date.
