PWD Chief Engineer clarifies on City Tower-DC Court Jn road improvement

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 23 (MExN): The Office of the Chief Engineer, PWD (R&B), Kohima, Nagaland on Wednesday issued a clarification on issues relating to the improvement of road between City Tower and DC Court Junction, Dimapur.

The press release issued by the Chief Engineer, PWD (R&B) informed that the work order was issued to M/S Khumtsa Awomi during 2013 vide No. CE (R&B)/Road-1/CT-DC/2013-14 Dated 25/10/2013. The work was completed in all respects within a period of 5 months and the payments for the completed works was paid in two installments-first payment of Rs 1500 lakhs released during April 2015 and second payment of Rs 442.48 lakh released during August 2016. Hence, the amount released for the road improvements amounted to Rs 1942.48 lakhs.

The Chief Engineer said the scope of work included construction of CC drains on both sides of the road throughout the entire length; providing sub base WBM grade III layer of 75mm thick, providing bituminous macadam (50mm thick) using paver finisher, providing seal coat, construction/reconstruction of culverts at various locations and providing dividers and railings.

Reasons for the deteriorating road condition were also pointed out in the press release. It claimed that although drainage was provided throughout the length of the road, non availability of proper water outlet in many locations led to over flowing of drainage water to the road surface causing damage to the road.

The plying of heavy laden vehicles especially carriage of sand from Assam side was also a major reason which caused damage to the road.

After completion of the works during 2014, no further periodical maintenance/repair works could be taken up till date due to fund constraints. Unless annual/regular maintenance works are carried out, the road condition will worsen, the Chief Engineer maintained.

While acknowledging “with all seriousness” the concern of ACAUT Nagaland and the citizens in general on the deteriorating road conditions in Dimapur and the rest of Nagaland, the Chief Engineer assured that the department shall assess the state of roads and bridges in the State and endeavor to improve the conditions on “receipt of funds from the government.”
