Quake rocks parts of Assam, Meghalaya, Bihar and Bengal

Guwahati, September 12 (MExN): An earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale shook Guwahati and its adjoining areas on Wednesday, the Met said.


The quake occurred at a depth of 13 km around 10.20 a.m. with its epicentre in Kokrajhar district, IANS reported quoting the India Meteorological Department.


An Assam State Disaster Management Authority official said there was no report of any major damage from anywhere in the state so far, it added.


However, in West Bengal, a panic-stricken youth died after he slipped while scrambling down the stairs of his house with his dog in Siliguri, another IANS report said.


Samrat Das, a B.Ed student who had come home on a holiday, lost consciousness after the fall and was declared brought dead at a private hospital. The body has been sent to the North Bengal Medical College Hospital for post mortem, it added.
