New Vice Chancellor assumes office in Nagaland University

Prof Pardeshi Lal, who assumed office as the 5th Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University on May 18 said quality teaching and focus on research and development would be his topmost priority.
The VC is appointed for the term of five years or up to the age of 70 years, or whichever is earlier.
“Since I am from within the system, I am thoroughly acquainted with the challenges and problems face by the university, the new VC told The Morung Express on Friday. Prof Lal was teaching under the Department of Zoology prior to current appointment and was also the Pro Vice Chancellor NU, Kohima Campus, Meriema.
In October 2016, the Naga Hoho had made a representation to Nagaland Governor P B Acharya regretting the university’s failure to become ‘at par with other progressive Central Universities’ despite 22 years of its existence.
Agreeing with the Hoho’s contention, Prof Lal said that as a university, the expectations of all stakeholders are valid. “As a new VC, I can only say that I will work and discharge my duties to address every concern,” he added.
Since assuming office on Thursday, Prof Lal has been meeting different section of people related to the university as well as every stakeholders.
Educators from NU when contacted by The Morung Express attested Prof Lal to be a competent and an able administrator.
“I am confident that university will grow positively under his tutelage,” Prof. SU Ahmed, the Head of Department of Zoology & Dean School of Sciences, NU and former colleague of the new VC expressed.
A researcher in ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Dr Sosang Longkumer also described Prof Lal as a critical research observer and able administrator under whose guidance, the university’s R&D could flourish.
NU was running without of regular VC since September 8, 2016 after Prof BK Konwar demitted office on completion of his five year term on September 8, 2016. .
In accordance with ordinance of University Grants Commission (UGC), the senior most Professor in the university, Dr NS Jamir, Professor of Botany and Pro Vice Chancellor of School of Agricultural Sciences and Rural Development (SASARD), Medziphema was officiating as VC since.
Being a central university, the Ministry of Human Resources Development began the lookout for a new VC in April 2016 through an open advertisement. The elevation of Prof Lal was reportedly confirmed in first week of May by the HRD Ministry.
NU, the 13th national and the sole Central University in Nagaland was established based by an Act of Parliament and received the assent of the President of India on October 20, 1989 and was formally inaugurated on September 6, 1994 having jurisdiction over the entire state of Nagaland.
“My only wish is to take the university into a new positive chapter,” the VC maintained.
