Railway Minister directs Safety Board to address Unmanned Level Crossings

Maligaon, September 9 (MExN): Minister of Railways and Coal, Piyush Goyal today held a meeting with members of the Railway Board & Safety Directorate of Railway Board to review the safety aspect of train operations.   CPRO, NF Railway, in a press release informed that threadbare discussions were held with the Minister emphasising that there should be no compromise on safety.   “The special focus of the meeting was to identify measures to reduce accidents due to derailments which have emerged as one of the major causes of train accidents,” the release said, while adding defects in tracks and unmanned level crossings were identified as the two major causes of accidents.   To address these, Minister Goyal directed the Railway Board to eliminate all unmanned level crossings in the entire Indian Railway network in a year’s time. According top priority to track replacement/renewal, expediting the procurement of new rails, replacing conventional ICF design coaches with new LHB coaches and installing anti-fog LED lights in locomotives for unhindered train operations were the other issues raised by Goyal.   “The Minister directed the Railway Board to monitor implementations of this action plan on a regular basis,” the release added.
