Rape accused assaulted, paraded around Mon town

DIMAPUR, MAY 30 (MExN): One person accused of allegedly raping a minor girl was assaulted by a mob and paraded naked around Mon town on May 30.  

The incident occurred as the accused, identified as one Rahul Sen, was being brought to the police by the victim’s family. He was stripped, tied to a roadside billboard frame, assaulted and thereafter paraded naked.  

Mon Police informed that the victim, who is 12 years of age, had alleged that the accused sexually assaulted her on multiple occasions; the latest incident occurring in April this year. This revelation was made by the victim to her sister, when the former complained of ill health and was taken to hospital.  

Subsequently the victim’s family caught hold of the accused. As the accused was being brought to the police, local residents who heard the news caught hold of him and proceeded to strip him naked and assault him. Mon Police informed that stones were also pelted at the accused.  

Hearing of the incident, the local police rushed to the site and managed to take the accused into custody. It was informed that some police personnel were also injured as a result of stone pelting by the irate crowd.  

Police informed that the accused, who hails from Sonari in Upper Assam’s Charaideo district, was working in a watch shop in Mon town. While his age could not be ascertained, police said that he was between 18-21 years of age.  

Two cases, one pertaining to the alleged rape and another about the mob assault, have been registered; and the accused has been forwarded to judicial custody.  

Stating that investigation is on, police informed that the situation in Mon town is now calm. It was added that the police have sought the cooperation of the Mon civil society to ensure that peace and calm is maintained.
