A book titled, ‘Ao Kin Dangi Khristian Yimsü Aruba’ (The Coming of Christianity to the Ao Nagas), narrating the first advent of Christianity among the Aos and how the religion took roots initially in most Ao villages and beyond, was released today.

Written by Tiala Imchen, the book was released by ABAM President Rev. Dr. Noklen Longkumer at a small function here today at DABA office building, Duncan Basti. This is Imchen’s fifth book and her fourth in 4 years.

Introducing the book, the author said the idea behind the book was incepted by a ‘very old man’ after the publication of her well-received 2015 book titled ‘Ao Lima Nüktzü’ (Tears of Ao Naga country).

While expressing his appreciation, the old villager told her to take the success as a starter to write something about the advent of Christianity among the Aos and also how it initially started in different villages for the benefit of future generation.

Initially she was confused about the subject matter and reluctant as writing in local dialects, especially with regard to early history, is quite complicated.   However, the old’s man idea stuck with here and Imchen continued to struggle with it. While pondering further and praying for it, she said, the idea of the book and the way to go about it came like a ‘vision.’

To take forward the project, the author informed that through the print media as well as personal correspondence, she announced her intention saying that if any village churches want to incorporate the establishment of early church in their village, they could express the same by December 31, 2016. Consequently, 34 villages responded to her and the story of the establishment of early churches in those villages was incorporated in one chapter of the book, with their permission.   Imchen further said the book is not about regular account of establishment of Christian religion in Nagaland, but replete with anecdotes as well as other researches.

In short, it tells how Dr. Clark entered the Ao areas, as well as how Christianity spread across the Ao people, overcoming various hurdles. Basically, it is the story of early pioneers in each village, Imchen maintained.

For instance, the book gives an account of how Dr. Clark was escorted by group of village warriors throughout on his first journey to Molungkimong village or how the first Christmas was celebrated with either a hen or duck or eels in many villages.

The book also tells about how the footpath to current Deputy Commissioner’s office in Mokokchung was initially built by 300 labours given by Christians in two villages when they could not pay the fine for practicing the new religion. It further narrates the story of first outreach mission of the Aos, resolved first in a meeting in 1897. It also gives brief account of the life of American Missionaries after they left Nagaland.

In his brief review of the book, Rev. O. Alem, Principal of Discipleship Bible College said that the book's beautiful narrative was devoid of any historical or political packages, which separate the book from others. He also called for translating it in English for wider audiences.

Releasing the book and endorsing Rev Alem’s view, ABAM President Rev. Dr. Noklen Longkumer, who is also the pastor of Ungma Baptist Church, said that the book presents story not only in sequence, but with vision and purpose. “I hope this book will revive us from our complacency,” he said.

Published by SP Printers, the book costing Rs. 550 is currently available in leading book stores across Nagaland, including OM Books Dimapur; Connect Dokan, Mokokchung and other places. One can also contact 9856072258/8794547313 for the book.
