Various organisations in Manipur have affirmed to campaign against the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) with much vigour. They said that AFSPA should be repealed for good from the entire North East region.
Speaking to reporters in Imphal, members of Committee on Human Rights (COHR), Manipur in association with Extra-judicial Execution Victims’ Families Association Manipur (EEVFAM), Human Rights Alert (HRA), Human Rights Defenders, Manipur (HRDM) and Just Peace Foundation (JPF), said that they will launch campaigns soon to repeal the AFSPA. However, they did not mention the date from when they will start their campaign.
The human rights defenders then alleged that under the impunity guaranteed by AFSPA security forces have been committing human rights violation all these years. They said that AFSPA should be repealed from the whole of North East India. The human rights defenders also said that they will continue to campaign against the draconian law until it is repealed.
It can be recalled that in the month of May this year civil society organizations and activists based in Manipur had called for a concerted and renewed campaign for the repeal of the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA), 1958.
In the year 2004, one Thangjam Manorama was killed by security forces personnel in Imphal East district. The people rose up in protest against the killing, and the subsequent demand for the repeal of AFSPA from the State. It can also be noted here that Irom Sharmila had protested for several years, while refusing to eat, against the AFSPA.
