Nagaland International Trade Expo Business Summit 2017

As part of the ongoing Nagaland International Trade Expo (NETex), an intensive Business Summit will be held on November 28 and 29 under the banner of ‘The Economics of Resources Building, Interdependence and Sustainability.’   Business Association of Nagas is organizing the Business Summit- resources building, interdependence and sustainability with the aim to create an interface with key stakeholders for generating awareness on the issues which can provide impetus towards the growth of trade and commerce in the region, informed the organisers in a handout.

On November 28, session 1 starting from 10:00 am will be on ‘Nagaland Special Development Zones in the foothills.’   The proposed Nagaland Special Development Zones (NSDZ) in the foothills has been a matter or much debate. Through the NSDZ, the state Government wishes to foster industrial growth and employment. On the other hand, tribal bodies are skeptical that protective laws of the land will be compromised.  

The panelists include Neiphiu Rio, MP, Lok Sabha; Alemtemshi Jamir, (IAS Retd) Former Chief Secretary; Theja Therieh, Publicity & Information Secy., Nagaland Tribes Council; Imkong Walling, Principal Correspondent, The Morung Express; Dr. Salikyu Sangtam, Asst. Professor, St. Joseph University.  

The second session, which starts at 2:00 pm will discuss ‘Prospect of Trade with Neighboring Countries.’  

The panelists are Bhanu Pratap Singh, CEO, North East Foundation; OSD, Skill Dev & Market, Government of Meghalaya; Kesang Wangdi, Dy, Secretary General, Bhutan Chamber of Commerce & Industry; R.C Agrawal, President, North East Federation on International Trade; Jesmina Zeliang, Founder, Naga Heirloom and Convener, North East Region, Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts and Rajeev Goswami, Deputy Director General, Federation of Industry and Commerce of North Eastern Region (FINER).

On November 29, session 1 at 10:30 am will focus on ‘Building Community Farming & Market linkages.’  

Is community farming they way forward in Nagaland and North East?  

The NE states have observed high production of some agricultural commodities but could not fetch market price to the farmers at par with the markets in other states. There is a need to diagnose the problems for providing improved marketing environment and value added economic benefits to the farmers through better management of various post-harvest functions of the agricultural crops.  

Panelists are Dr. Elithung Lotha, HoD, Horticulture Department, Govt. of Nagaland; Farmer Samir Bordoli, Agriprenuer and Organic Farming Consultant; Ella Mary, Consultant, Youth Action for Rural Development; Dr. Aotoshi, CEO window media, Former Chairman, CII Nagaland; Lipok Longkumer, Chairman, Shibah Welfare, Nagaland.  

The next session starting at 2:00 pm will be on ‘Building Competent Human Resources.’  

Nagaland has a young population and high literacy rate compared to many other states in India. There is a need to create a workforce empowered with the right attitude, improved skills, knowledge and recognized qualifications to gain access to decent employment.
