Sainik School parents express concerns, give suggestions

Kohima, October 22 (MExN): The Parents Association of Sainik School Punglwa has put forth suggestions and observations in the interest of the cadets and welfare of the school. This comes after a general meeting of the association held at Hotel Japfü, Kohima on October 14, where the members expressed concerns that affect the growth of the cadets and the school.   According to a press release from the association’s president Neilo Khape, since the beginning of the academic session 2017-18, the school authority started repair & renovation work for hostels. The association approached the authority and requested for early completion, to which the latter assured to complete within 15 days. “However, after lapse of several months, the work is pending completion and the work progress is in a very slow pace. The cadets are made to suffer without proper rooms and basic facilities for almost a year,” it lamented. Therefore, the association has requested the concerned contractor and the authority to speed up the work and provide proper atmosphere to the cadets.

The association also alleged that the school authority is giving excessive liberty to the senior cadets, resulting in exploitation of junior cadets to maximum. “There are cases of ragging and corporal punishment meted out to the juniors by the senior cadets for last many years. Children got admitted to the school after qualifying for mental, oral, medical and physical fitness prescribed by the school, whereas, the level of mental and physical torture by some senior cadets is a thing to worry,” it said. The release claimed that many cadets are undergoing medical treatments in various hospitals. “It went unnoticed and unreported due to callous attitude of the school authority.”

It further noted that due to absence of proper warden quarter attached to the hostels, there have been unwanted cases of misbehaviour by some indiscipline cadets. Therefore, the association requested the authority to look into the matter and initiate some remedial measures.

Due to lack of proper fencing along the school boundary, the release added, many unwanted elements are smuggled into the school. In this regard, the authority was urged to view it with all seriousness.

The association further asserted that the state government must sincerely look into the progress and development of the school. “However, it has been observed that the government particularly the department of school education has not been able to cater the basic needs of the school as contained in the Memorandum/Agreement,” it rued. Thus, the association requested the government to provide necessary infrastructure as required by the school.

Regarding accounts of the cadets, the parents’ body demanded that the authority must maintain transparency. “The authority should not deny the rights of the parents and cadets to obtain their annual Account Statement, rather provide proper statements as required by the parents,” it stated.

Meanwhile, it observed that the Tailor Master of the school is “performing the duty in a very random manner.”

Quoting report that the uniforms are not stitched proportionately causing inconvenience to the cadets, the release stated that the authority must monitor and streamline the performance of the Tailor Master and provide proper uniform as per the required size of the cadets.

For all round developments of an individual, it added, games & sports facilities must be ensured at all cost. “It is learnt that there is no indoor stadium facility in the school and thereby creating inconveniences to the cadets,” the release stated.

The association further said it is fully aware of the laid down rules and regulations of the school and therefore, in the event of any cadet(s) being suspended or expelled by the authority for violation of conduct of rules and regulations, the association will not interfere, but rather support the decision of the school.

It also warned that it will not bear any responsibility for those parents who fail to cooperate with the activities of the association.
