SEMB Aongza Ward organizes sensitization programme

Mokokchung, October 3 (MExN): The Socio Environment Management Board (SEMB) Aongza Ward, Mokokchung organized a sensitization programme on ‘Dog Registration and Proper Control of Dogs; Rules and Regulations 2017 on October 2 at the GMS Pongentula premises.  

R. Longritemjen Ao, Chairman Aongza Ward spoke on the recently enforced Dog Registration and Proper Control of Dogs; Rules and Regulations 2017 which was laid down by the Mokokchung Municipal Council in collaboration with the Mokokchung Local Ward Authorities.  

He highlighted that these rules and regulations were adopted so as to bring about responsible dog ownership and to control the habit of letting dogs roam freely in the colony/town, which has created problems in relation to public health and sanitation. The Dog Registration rules and regulations were explained to the dog owners in detail and that 60% of the registration fees were given to the respective wards for sensitization and enforcement programs to be carried out in the wards. Dog owners were directed to put a passport size photo of their dogs in the registration cards and that all dogs should wear a dog collar.  

The Aongza Ward authority has delegated the SEMB to stringently implement these rules and regulations and if there arise any problems, the matter will be taken up by the Ward Authority.  

Dr. Aoyimsen Jamir, VAS (PH) from the department of A.H & Veterinary Services in topic, Proper Care and Management of Dogs enlightened the owners on the positive benefits we gain everyday through pets for our well-being and quality of life. He said that peoples attitude towards keeping of a pet and the basic sense of owning a pet has also changed. The term for dogs or cats as pets has been shifted to Companion animals these days and that they are a part and parcel of the family to many. He encouraged all to be responsible dog owners and having a dog in the family has many benefits, especially for families with young children as well as for singles and the elderly.  

Dr. Aoyimsen also emphasized on the importance of annual vaccinations, not just on rabies but for other canine diseases. He also emphasized on the common diseases encountered in Mokokchung and the importance of regular deworming of their dogs.  

There was also an active interaction session where dog owners welcomed the move taken by the MMC and Local Ward Authorities. The programme was followed by the distribution of anthelmintic medicine to all the dogs and the new registration and immunization process of the new dogs. Altogether, 141 dogs have been registered and immunized under Aongza ward.
