Seminar on gender based violence held

Kiphire, May 29 (MExN): A seminar on 'gender based violence' was organised by the office of the  Deputy Commissioner and Sakhi one stop center, Kiphire in collaboration with Nagaland state social welfare and State Resource Centre for women on May 28 at Hopongkyu Memorial Hall, Kiphire.

The Chairman of the Nagaland State Social Welfare Board, Bano Vinito addressed key issues faced by the women in the present society where she stated that perpetrators become bolder when gender related violence are hushed in our society.

She also stressed that children must be given proper education and equipped them with life skills so that they become independent adults. Girls must be given quality education to make them economically independent. She further said that gender based violence must be stopped at home and to respect women in their lives as an individual and not disregard her as a weaker gender. Gracy Aye, State Coordinator SRCW stated that gender based violence can happen to any girl or women, anytime, anywhere irrespective of age, race or class.

Vulnerable women and children continue to be victims of abuse and other exploitative situation due to lack of awareness. Gender based violence is manifested in various forms, some of which she highlighted were: Child sexual abuse, Child marriage, Domestic violence, Human trafficking, Sexual Harassment at work place, Cybercrime etc. Khuzah Jurry, SDPO Kiphire gave an overview on the situation of violence against women and children in Kiphire district. Hotingkyu, Advocate, DLSA spoke on the legal mechanism for women and children affected by gender based violence.

A DIPR report stated that the seminar was attended by various church women leaders, tribal women leaders and NGOS leaders.
