Senior Naga national leader AZ Jami passes away

Senior Naga national leader, Lt Gen (Retd) AZ Jami (Ashemo Zubonthung Jami) passed away on Saturday at Zion Hospital, Dimapur at 4:00 pm after a prolonged illness. He was 80.  

Late AZ Jami, who was then senior kilonser in the NSCN (IM), had recently resigned from primary and active membership on personal reasons on July, 2018. In a public resignation letter, the late AZ Jami had stated that he is “one of the very few surviving senior most Naga freedom fighters. But due to old age coupled with old age ailments I think I should not be so selfish to cling to a particular post.”  

The senior kilonser who served 63 years in the Naga national service was one of the leading officers of the Naga Army who undertook the 3rd batch of alee command (foreign Command).  

Academically, late AZ Jami was the first Naga student to secure the 9th position of top ten in the IA exams from Guwahati University in the early 60s. During the time, Guwahati University was the only University in the entire North-East India.  

Late AZ Jami served the NSCN (IM) in various capacities. He was deputy kilonser of MIP and then he was inducted as a cabinet kilonser for law and justice of NSCN/GPRN.  

He was cabinet kilonser of Ministry of Information and Publicity (MIP) for three times.  

He held a cabinet kilonser post of trade and commerce for a short time. And was also the kilo-kilonser for some time. He was made a member of steering committee three times and was also executive secretary of the S.C for a term.  

In 2005, due to some differences with his colleague, late AZ Jami left NSCN (IM) by submitting a formal resignation letter and joined the NSCN (K).  

In the NSCN (K), he was made the kilonser of MIP and education, and then the convener of the cabinet committee, to be functioned during the absence of the collective leadership.  

In 2007, late AZ Jami returned to the NSCN (IM).   Late AZ Jami was in the NNC for 37 years, 3 years in NSCN (K) and 20 years in the NSCN (IM).  

Family sources informed that the funeral service of late AZ Jami would be held on October 7 at his residence of Diphupar-B, Dimapur at 1:00 pm.
