Seven held for Imphal gang-rape

  Manipur Govt promises 'stringent actions'   Newmai News Network Imphal | April 21   The Manipur Government has promised 'stringent action' against those people involved in the rape of two girls last week in Imphal.   Seven youths have been reportedly arrested by the police in connection with the incident. Full interrogations are said to be underway.   The incident took place on April 14 when four students, two boys and two girls, were travelling on motorcycles around Imphal East to witness a cultural event.   They were waylaid by some miscreants who took them to a secluded place to commit the crime.  The two boys were also reportedly thrashed by the perpetrators when they tried to protect the girls.   On the advice of the Minister for Social Welfare and Cooperation, Nemcha Kipgen , a team of Manipur State Commission for Women led by its Chairperson Dr. K Sobita Devi and members and the Chairperson, Manipur State Social Welfare Board have jointly examined the case and have also counseled and given 'moral support' to the victims and their families.   Necessary medical examinations of the victims had been conducted and the victims were handed over to their respective parents after their consent, a press note from the DIPR said.   Meanwhile, Minister for Social Welfare and Cooperation, Nemcha Kipgen has strongly condemned the incident and said, “Stringent action will be taken up against those culprits involved in such grievous and inhuman act so as to avoid incident like this in future.”   The Minister has also given assurance for extending maximum assistance in getting justice done to the victims.   Kipgen lauded also the timely and efficient work carried out by the Manipur police.   It can be noted here that after the incident, Child Welfare Committee, Imphal East district and Child Protection Officer and Women Police Station, Imphal East have jointly worked out to find the whereabouts of the culprits.   As per the report by the team, the culprits are now under the Porompat police custody against the FIR No. 15(4)2017WPS-IE u/s 376D/120-B/363/34IPC and 6 POCSO Act 2012.
