‘State Govt failing to protect consumer’s rights’

Kohima, September 4 (MExN): While culminating the campaign, the team led by its Professor-in-Charge Kezhokhoto Savi has demanded the State Government that the department of Food & Civil Supplies effectively implements the National Food Security Act 2013 in Nagaland. The team stated that many deserving citizens in the state are not getting their due shares either in the category of Priority Household (PPH) or AAY for rice at the rate of Rs.3/- per kg and wheat at the rate of Rs.2/- per kg.

“The State Government is still failing to take up certain effective measures to promote and protect the rights of the consumers and awareness on consumer rights amongst the citizens is still lacking,” the team claimed. It added that the Food Safety & Standard Act 2006 in Nagaland is yet to be effectively implement such as a slaughter house with required facilities and several others is the need of the hour to ensure food safety in the market, the Analysis Wing i.e. Food Testing Laboratory under a Public Analyst and the Enforcement Wing i.e. the Food Safety Officer are to be more equipped in ensuring food safety to the consumers.

Lokayukta is to be established in Nagaland at the earliest mainly to curb corruption in the state. The council of ministers is just buying time in order not to introduce Lokayukta which is to check the corrupt public servants and politicians including some of them, the team said while also demanding to constitute State Human Rights Commission in Nagaland.

It also demands to lay down the rules and criteria for the induction of State Information Commissioner. The Commission is headed by a retired chief secretary to the Government of Nagaland and two retired chief engineer.

“The composition of Commission has a bias towards retired government servants,” the team alleged. It is desirable to have a more balanced composition so that diverse expertise is represented in the Commission.

“To educate the citizens on practice ‘Clean Election’ mainly for the forth coming State General Assembly Election is the need of the hour,” the team also added in their list of demand.

Further, it said that medical negligence is coming under the provision of the Consumer Protection Act 1986 where it is compensatory in nature where more awareness is require.
