Stir demanding district status for Jiribam resumes

IMPHAL, September 24 (NNN): Sit-in protests were organised in different parts of Jiribam subdivision bordering Assam today continuing the demand for up-gradation of the subdivision to a full-fledged revenue district. The demonstration was held under the banner of Jiribam District Demand Committee (JDDC), which called for immediate implementation of their long-pending demand.   The committee said the State government has been ignoring the plight of Jiribam. The committee has said people of the subdivision have been facing immense hardship and inconveniences as Jiribam is located about 225 km from the district headquarters.   JDDC said it has resumed agitation to pressure the state government which it said assured repeated false promises to the committee. Other forms of agitation will be taken up in the coming days, the committee threatened. In 2011, the State government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with JDDC to fulfill the demand but no concrete step has been initiated by the former till date. On the other hand, the Zeliangrong Youth Front (ZYF) has demanded Jiribam District Demand Committee to provide a clear picture to the Zeliangrong people with regard to villages to be incorporated in the proposed Jiribam district.   It has also demanded that the Jiribam committee comes up with a clear map and boundary of the proposed district. ZYF fears that some Zeliangrong villages will go to Jiribam when it becomes a full-fledged revenue district. Ceding "Zeliangrong land" for the purpose will be opposed although making Jiribam a full-fledged district has nothing to do with it, ZYF asserted.   The state government of Manipur has been urged by the Front to resolve "encroachment disturbances" by some individuals in Tamenglong district. An Inter District Boundary Dispute Committee was later set up to handle the issue subsequently.
