Student bodies seek clarification on scholarship installment issue

DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 20 (MExN): The Nagaland University Students Union (NUSU (L) has sought clarification from the department of education on the recent disbursement of Post-Graduate scholarship on installment basis for the year 2016-17.

“The NUSU (L) would like to know under which policy of the Government is the scholarship issued on installment basis and how has this policy applied to students in Nagaland,” a press statement from the NUSU (L) president, K Chumseli Anar and general secretary, Esther Lohe questioned.

Maintaining that most of the students depend on their scholarship for paying their admission fees, hostel fees, books and other requirements, the students’ body said disbursement of scholarship on installment basis not only deprive the students of their rights but also hampers the academic growth of the student community.

In this connection, the NUSU (L) has asked the concerned department to give clarification on the issue at the earliest, while adding that failure to provide clarification will result in further course of action for which department and state government will solely be responsible.

Meanwhile, the Eastern Naga College Students’ Union (ENCSU) expressed “surprise and shock over what it termed as eyewash clarification from the Director of Higher Education.”

In a separate statement, Media cell, ENCSU said it would be “glad to see the copy of the directive given by the Central Ministry as claimed by the Director in black and white.”

It also asked the concerned department to clarify to their 5-point demands highlighted earlier if the claim so made by the Director happens to be valid. It maintained that until and unless the department comes up with fact and figures, the claim made by the higher education department would be deemed as “just another system of manipulation.”

The ENCSU also alleged that the Nagas are fully aware that the department and the Nagaland Government divert the funds meant for students’ scholarship for other purpose every year.

Vowing to stand and safeguard the interest of the students’ community, the ENCSU has reiterated their demand to justify the irregularities on the issue of disbursing scholarship at the earliest.
