People are still protesting even as police continue to crack down against staging protest of any form demanding justice for the student who died in a controversial circumstance in her hostel room on July 18 last.

Even though police managed to foil the protest in some localities, residents of Thangmeiband area in Imphal where the deceased student hailed from continued to stage the same relay-hunger strike on August 23.

On Thursday, police had foiled a large number of womenfolk from different areas of Thangmeiband from staging the relay-hunger strike at the waiting shed opposite THAU Ground. Angered by the police act, the residents had even imposed road blockade across Thangmeiband.

Even after the police repeatedly stopped them from staging the protest, around 100 womenfolk staged the relay-hunger strike on Friday at three different places – Hijam Dewan Leikai, Khondram Selungba Leikai and Lourembam Purel Leikai. “Arrest the murder(s)” and “Hang the murderer(s) till death” were among other slogans displayed at the protest site.

Talking to reporters, leaders of the protesting women said that the "arrogant attitude" of the government towards the issue and their "inability" to find out the truth behind the death of the girl even after a month were highly condemnable. The 12-year-old student of Class-VII studied at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, in Imphal’s Canchipur was found dead by hanging in her hostel dormitory on July 18 last. The Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with the death of the student has been launching various forms of agitation demanding justice for the victim girl.
