Aizawl | September 16
Hundreds of students on Saturday staged a protest rally in Aizawl under the aegis of Joint Students’ Union representing nine lump-sum grant-in-aid higher secondary schools demanding adhoc status. The protest rally was held between Chanmari and Vanapa Hall.
The students blamed the Congress led state government for paying a deaf ear to their demands and asked to step down.
The students have been demanding the state government to upgrade nine higher secondary schools in Sakawrdai, Phullen, Thingsulthliah and North East Khawdungsei in Aizawl district, Zawlnuam and West Phaileng in Mamit district, East Lungdar in Serchhip district, Farkawn in Champhai district and Zobawk in Lunglei district to adhoc status.
A student leader said that the schools were run by the villages out of public contributions for more than 14 years, and alleged that it is difficult to run the schools with a meager grant from the state government.
Earlier the 9 schools had launched agitation by closing their respective schools from June 18 to August 6.
Road blocks and strikes had also been imposed in nine villages during July 26 to 30, demanding adhoc status.
