TA soldiers rescue one from 'angry mob'

KOHIMA, AUGUST 23 (MExN): Soldiers of the 164 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) (Home & Hearth) Naga Regiment rescued one person from the clutches of "an angry mob" in Tuensang on August 23.

A press release issued by the Defence PRO, Kohima stated that soldiers of a unit of the infantry battalion stationed in Tuensang intervened to disperse a group of  locals, who it claimed, had gathered to “give street justice” to one person caught for allegedly burgling a ‘pan’ (betel) shop in the early hours of August 23.

While stating that the incident happened in front of the unit’s camp in Tuensang, it added that the alleged burglar was being beaten tied to a pole. It cited “eyewitness” accounts as claiming the person to have also been involved in other burglaries in the past.

Considering the gravity of the situation and its repercussion, the TA soldiers led by a JCO intervened and stabilized the situation, the release said.

It added that the alleged thief was rescued, given first aid and the local police were informed. He was subsequently handed over to the police.
