Team TR Zeliang, Rio meet Governor

Kohima, July 15 (MExN): Amid the political crisis in the ruling Naga People’s Front (NPF), with claims and counter claims, the dissident camp lead by TR Zeliang, the NPF Legislature Party Leader along with Neiphiu Rio, the Lok Sabha MP today met the Governor of Nagaland, PB Acharya.   The team comprising 43 MLAs (36 NPF MLAs and 7 Independent MLAs) besides Rio apprised the Governor of the present crisis in the Government, according to a press statement from Tokheho Yepthomi, MLA & NPF ‘Spokesperson.’   Claiming that the 43 MLAs are elected, and therefore mandated the people to run the affairs of the State, Tokheho asserted, “Under no circumstances can these MLAs be termed as trouble makers or imposters.”   Consequently, the ‘Spokesperson’ insisted that the incumbent Chief Minister Dr. Shürhozelie Liezietsu, who is “non mandated (not elected),” has been running the affairs of the State for the last 8-9 days with just 11 MLAs, which is “totally unimaginable and has never happened in the history of India.”   Defending Acharya directive for floor test, Tokheho said that the Governor is doing so “as per the Constitutional provisions and requirements.”   Further claiming that Dr. Shürhozelie is running the State minority government, the 43 MLAs appealed to the people of Nagaland, both individually and collectively, to “speak out the truth who is in majority and who is in minority as well as who is right and who is wrong without fear or favour.”   Let majority rule, says Zeliang Meanwhile, in a separate statement from Azeu Namcyn Hau, Press Secretary to NPF Legislature Party Leader said that the 43 legislators, while urging the Governor to uphold the Constitution, pointed out the “abnormal functioning style” of the incumbent Chief Minister was totally unacceptable.   Acharya maintaining that whoever proved majority must run the Government said that he was “convinced prima facie that TR Zeliang has clear majority,” the statement said.   “Any Chief Minister is fine with me provided he has majority support,” the Governor told the team, adding BJP-NPF alliance must not be broken for stability and development.   Zeliang also said that the minority Government headed by Dr. Shürhozelie should be asked to step down honorably instead of heading to the legal battlefield to cling on to power, the statement added.   Acharya was urged to direct the Chief Secretary to stop all appointments and payments besides salaries under the State Government. Zeliang also said the termination of legislators, withdrawal of official bungalows and security and asking legislators to vacate within 1 week was unbecoming of a leader. The removal of Independent Parliamentary Secretaries from office proved that the present crisis involves DAN Government, and not an internal crisis, he added.   Zeliang also noted that with the announcement of bye-election to Northern Angami-I, the code of conduct had come into force from June 29, and termination of legislators by Shürhozelie was a violation since it amounted to influencing his own election.   Dictatorial and autocratic attitude: Rio Meanwhile, Rio cited the “dictatorial and autocratic attitude” of the incumbent Chief Minister, the release said. “They cannot run a minority Government and keep on taking policy decisions almost every day,” the MP stated.   On reconciliation within the NPF party, Rio while pointing out the “pick and choose” practiced by Shürhozelie during 2014, 2015 and 2016 stated that the CM “does not want to reconcile with anybody, not in the interest of the Party or in the interest of the Naga people.”   “Now he is revoking my suspension order which is a mockery,” he said. “Such action is simply to wash the eye of the public who do not know the inside story of the Party.”   Rio further wondered what reconciliation meant when the CM and his supporters were organizing rallies in Kohima and Chumukedima holding placards with “insulting contents.”
