1922 - The British Broadcasting Company (BBC) was formed.

 

1931 - The American inventor Thomas Alva Edison died. In his lifetime he held over 1,000 patents, the most famous being the electric lamp, the phonograph and the motion picture projector.

 

1944 - Russia invaded Czechoslovakia.

 

1977 - Three Palestinian hijackers were killed when German commandos stormed a Lufthansa aircraft at Mogadishu Airport. All 86 passengers, who had been held hostage for five days, were freed.

 

1989 - Long-time East German communist leader Erich Honecker stepped down, officially on health grounds, and was replaced by Egon Krenz.

 

1997 - Guggenheim museum opens in Bilbao.

 

2000 - Opposition lawmakers in the Philippines started impeachment proceedings against President Joseph Estrada, saying he had taken millions of dollars in bribes from gambling lords.

 

2001 - Winnie Madikizela-Mandel, ex-wife of former President Nelson Mandela, was charged with fraud and theft involving nearly 1 million rand ($110,000). She was later sentenced to five years but avoided jail on appeal.

 

2006 - Marc Hodler, the senior International Olympic Committee (IOC) member who exposed the Salt Lake City corruption scandal, died aged 87.

 

2007 - First-ever fashion show on Great Wall of China.

 

2007 - Benazir Bhutto returns to Pakistan after eight years in exile.
