1903 - Camille Pissarro, prolific painter of the French Impressionist era, died.

1913 - The first modern elasticated brassiere was patented in the United States by Mary Phelps Jacob.

1945 - General Charles de Gaulle was elected president of the French Provisional Government.

1970 - Hafez al-Assad seized power in Syria in a bloodless military coup.

1985 - Colombia's Nevado del Ruiz volcano erupted, killing an estimated 25,000 people.

1998 - Lawyers for U.S. President Bill Clinton and Paula Jones settled her four-year-old sexual harassment lawsuit with an agreement that he would pay her $850,000 but make no apology.

2000 - Philippine President Joseph Estrada was impeached on corruption charges.

2001 - Afghan opposition fighters captured Kabul.

2002 - China's Communist Party Congress, ending months of speculation, confirmed Jiang Zemin would step down as party chief and make way for a new generation of leaders.

2003 - Two weeks after receiving the designation of oldest person in the world, Mitoyo Kawate died in Hiroshima, Japan, at the age of 114.

2015 - Co-ordinated attacks in Paris targeting a stadium, concert venue and other sites kill 130 people.
