Training on ‘Advanced management practices for Sericulture’ conducted

Dimapur, January 19 (MExN): State Agricultural Management and Extension Training Institute (SAMETI) organised a two day training programme on “Advanced Management Practices for Sericulture: Production, Post Harvest and Value Addition” for ATMA functionaries at SAMETI, Medziphema on January 18 and 19. The training programme was aimed at imparting the latest technology on sericulture and creating awareness about the ongoing programmes provided by the department.  

Resource persons for the training program were Vilhousienuo Khro, Assistant Sericulture Officer, and Mayangjala Walling, Extension Officer, District Sericulture Officer, Dimapur.  

The training course covered topics on Silkworm Rearing, Construction of rearing house and disinfectant, Plantation and Maintenance, Post Harvest management practices for Sericulture and Value addition.  

The participants were taken to the District Sericulture Office, Dimapur as part of field visit and practicals. They visited the Cocoon Bank where cocoons, after processing were exported to West Bengal and Karnataka. They were also taken to the silk reeling and twisting, dyeing and weaving units where Ninoto Zhimomi, Designer under the department gave an overview of the operation of the various units. The field visit concluded with interaction and discussion with the workers under the different units.  

Following up on the field visit, group presentations were given by the participants based on their observations and experiences from the visit.  

The valedictory function was chaired by Tiajungla Longchar, DPD SAMETI, while feedback on the training was given by Ekonthung Odyuo, BTM Phek and Livika Zhimomi, BTM Zunheboto.  

Special guest, Dr. Watimongla Jamir, Vice Principal & in charge, Bio-Chemistry Lab I.E.T.C, Medziphema in her valedictory address congratulated the participants on successfully completing the training programme.  

She opined that Silk is becoming very popular and considered as one of the most promising Agricultural enterprises, having high demand in both domestic and international market. She also proposed the cultivation of castor and mulberry plants on a large scale so as to benefit not only the Sericulture department but also to counter the effects of climate change and Jhum.  

The training programme saw a good turnout of participants from all districts of the state and concluded with distribution of certificates and training handouts to the trainees by the resource persons Vilhousienuo Khro, Assistant Sericulture Officer and Mayangjala Walling, Extension Officer.
