Truck driver assaulted over tax demand, PAC condemns

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 20 (MExN): The Public Action Committee (PAC), Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) has condemned the alleged assault of a truck driver coming from Dimapur to Imphal on November 20 by suspected NSCN (IM) cadres in connection with tax demand of Rs 15,000. The incident occurred at Khuzama Excise check gate under Kohima district on Wednesday morning when the cadres, who came in a taxi, allegedly beaten up the driver when he requested the former to speak to the owner.

The cadres reportedly “snatched Rs 10,000 from the driver,” PAC stated in a condemnation note issued by its Media Cell, adding it was “shocked and disturbed,” by the incident.  The driver was later taken for treatment to Mao, it said, quoting police sources.

Condemning it as an act of “daylight extortion and highhandedness,” the PAC termed it beyond comprehension that the NSCN (IM) cadres should create "such a situation when their leaders are in talks with the Government of India at the highest level and Nagas are looking forward to a long lasting settlement."

In this connection, the PAC asked the NSCN (IM) identify the cadres involved and hand them over to the administration at the earliest for punishment deemed fit.
