Two killed in landslides in Mizoram

  Newmai News Network Aizawl | June 11   In a tragic incident, at least two persons were killed in landslides triggered by heavy rains at two separate locations in Mizoram on Saturday.   Sources said that a 29-year-old woman was killed when a house was swept away by massive landslide at Zemabawk area in the north-eastern outskirt of Aizawl. The incident occurred around 4:30 pm on Saturday when the landslide caused by flash flood swept away the house belonging to one Lawmthara.   More than 12 people were present at the time of the incident. The victim Laldinpuii along with her 7 months old baby were in the ground floor. Although other occupants escaped unhurt or with minor injuries, the mother and her child were buried under the debris. The local volunteers took over two hours to locate them. They were rushed to a nearby Green Wood Hospital where Laldinpuii succumbed to her injury around 7 in the evening, sources said.     The child is being treated at Synod hospital, Durtlang, Aizawl and his condition is stated to be out of danger.   Over a thousand people assembled to mourn the deceased during her funeral held at YMA hall in Zemabawk on Sunday.   In another incident, a young man was killed in a landslide near Khumtung village in central eastern Mizoram’s Serchhip district on Saturday. The victim was identified as Maruata of Dawrpui Vengthar locality in Aizawl.   Sources said that the victim and his friend Lallawmawma were travelling in a mini truck when the landslide triggered by heavy rains suddenly occurred and buried them under.  Local volunteers rescued Lallawmawma from the debris, while Maruata was found killed, sources added.   Sources also said that heavy rains that lashed Mizoram on Saturday evening caused landslides at several places in the state damaging houses and blocking highways.
