With the objective of inculcating research orientation as well as facilitating learning through new sets of knowledge and skills, Immanuel College, Dimapur today organised a ‘Seminar on Research Methodology’.
It was also aimed at imparting research idea, especially among the faculties, which will ultimately lead to improvement in teaching as well as publication of research papers and books.
Dr. Samuel Wati, a faculty of Sociology at National Institute of Technology (NIT), Nagaland and Dr. Phuveyi Dozo, President, United College of Theology & Missions, Dimapur were the resource persons at the seminar.
In his presentation in the first session, Dr. Wati dealt with ‘Prospects and Challenges of Social Science Research’ and highlighted various aspects of academic researches including the objectives, methods as well as ethical issues.
Apart from the general issues related to academic research, he called for more researches with the Naga society in context especially through ethnographic studies.
Among others, such narratives are needed for deeper understanding of the society, dispelling assumed stereotyping, and sharing ‘lived experiences,’ he said, adding that researches need not always be pure academic exercise.
In the second session, Dr. Dozo focused on ways to go about empirical researches as well as book writing. A prolific writer himself, besides dealing with methods and design, he spoke on practical aspects of presenting research works or books.
On writing, Dr. Dozo stressed on recognising a target audience before embarking on any book project. He also took the gathering into a journey of envisioning the process as well as its various components. Towards this end, he also noted that plagiarism of any kind is unacceptable in any writing and proper referencing is the hallmark of a good academic research.
The seminar was chaired by O Lothunglo Ngullie, the HoD of Botany, Immanuel College, and the rapporteurs were Imolangla Pongen and Talichuba Walling, faculties in English and Political Science departments respectively.
