The Union Cabinet on Wednesday gave its nod to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019 that seeks to provide Indian nationality to Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Parsis, Jains and Buddhists fleeing persecution in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Responding to questions, Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said the Citizenship Amendment Bill takes care of India's interests.

"I am confident that when the Bill's provisions are announced, Assam, Northeast and the entire country will welcome it."
He said that the Bill will be introduced in Parliament in a day or two.

Meanwhile, multiple national and regional news outlets reported official sources as stating that Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime areas and those regions which are governed under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution are learnt to have been excluded from the purview of the bill.

States under the purview of the BEFR and ILP include Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Nagaland; while those under the 6th Schedule include Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura.
