Violence mars Phiro Village Council chairman election

The damaged roof of a candidate's residence, which was stoned by supporters of another candidate in Phiro village  under Wokha district,. The incident happened on April 18, a day before the village council election.

DIMAPUR, APRIL 20 (MExN): In an untoward incident, the supporters of one of the candidates in the Phiro village chairman elections, stoned the house of another contending candidate, injuring three persons including one minor and resulting in extensive damage to the property. The incident occurred on the night of April 18, informed a press note received here issued Renchumo Odyuo, Yilumo Patton and Nrio Ovung all GBs.
According to the GBs, the mob was led by an ex-chairman (candidate) supported by an underground cadre. To control the situation, the Deputy Commissioner, Wokha issued a restraining order which resulted in the postponement of the elections which was to be held on April 19, the press note stated.
It was informed that this was the first time that such barbarism has occurred in Phiro village which has shocked the whole community. “Phiro happens to be the oldest village and one of the advanced villages in Wokha district. In this regard, the village authorities urge every citizen of Phiro village to vehemently condemn such heinous acts and make all effort to maintain peace and congeniality among the village folk”. Further, the village heads urged the administrative authority to take appropriate action against the perpetrators at the earliest.
