Former Chief Minister and Governor, Dr SC Jamir today lamented that lack of governance and fragmentation of groups have “broken” the “strong walls built by leaders of yesterday” leaving the people in a “political quagmire.”

Addressing the 38th Foundation Day cum Day of Prayer at Discipleship Bible College, Dimapur as the Guest of Honour, Dr. Jamir recalled the times of yesteryears when unity and solidarity among the Nagas for the cause dear to them was the hallmark.

“But today we are witnessing the tower and Babel (Biblical tower) in Naga politics. Both overground and underground have one cause and are one people yet they were speaking in different languages and voices,” he remarked.

The veteran leader viewed that the “most distressing spectacle” of Naga society was its fragmentation into multiple groups.

“There had been mushroom growth of factions over the years…These negative elements have made the Nagas dwarf in all departments of human society. The entire system of governance is collapsed. Today we are living in a society free for all but no one is free,” stated Dr. Jamir in a speech-booklet which was distributed during the programme.

He also said that owing to mismanagement at all levels, all developments were at standstill thereby landing the state in economic doldrums.

He rued that despite the state being 95% Christian population and being regular Church-goers, there was hardly a semblance of Christian character and that the “monster of corruption” had devoured the society.

“Morality and spirituality have no place in this land. Surely we are living in a broken society with all walls around us broken,” he asserted.

Having dwelt upon these aspects, the former Chief Minister called upon the young people to start rebuilding Nagaland anew stating that they are the hope of the future and described them as “enlightened.” “You have the strength and energy to reinvent, redesign and reform for a united, peaceful, progressive and prosperous Nagaland,” he told the younger generation.

Describing his address as a “free and frank discourse” with the young people, Dr. Jamir encouraged them to equip themselves with all available tools in this age of knowledge which itself was changing fast and would accelerate further change in the future. He remarked that politicians and leaders of the state were talking only of the past and called for talking about the present and future with vision and a committed mind to truly work for the people.

“Thousands of yesterdays have gone and what you have is today, make use of it,” he said calling upon the young to be prepared for today as it would design their tomorrow.

The former Governor encouraged the youngsters to imbibe the spirit of Israel to survive, and the discipline and civic sense of Singapore. He said Nagaland had been preserved by God since the time of creation and added there was no reason why the state cannot progress if the people had the will to work and compete.

Dr. Jamir said people in the past have been talking about natural resources as the foundation for economic development but today it is knowledge which is the development matrix.

He called upon the students of Discipleship Bible College to ponder on whether they were committed to be His disciples or they joined the college  to just pass time.

Earlier, during the programme, Former Chairman, Board of Governors, DBC, Er Obang Longchari pronounced special prayer for the college, while the Principal, Associate Professor, S. Wati delivered the welcome address.
