Salangtem Ward under Mokokchung town observed the year 2017 as Year of Environmental Aesthetics with the proactive participation of all the residents of the ward as resolved during their general meeting in December 2016.
In observance of the Year, which was coordinated by the Salangtem Ward Authority or Yimten, several activities were carried out in relation to the theme all year long. Emphasis was laid on cleanliness, sanitation and owning social responsibility by the community for the environment and aesthetics.
Apart from participating in cleanliness drives organized by MMC and Swachh Bharat Mission, residents of the ward also organized at least 3 more mass social works. Some of the major works carried out by the residents included repairing of two drainage culverts, widening of road adjacent to GMS Salangtem, patching pot holes in 2 roads under PWD and 1 road under Urban Development Department falling within the ward jurisdiction. Residents also paved an important link road in the ward with concrete. All of these works were done with financial and labour contributions made by the residents themselves.
At least two hundred ornamental trees were also planted in public spaces in the ward while five hundred different fruit-bearing trees were also planted by residents in their backyards and gardens initiated by the ward authority. All roadside residents in the ward also voluntarily painted their walls facing the roads to enhance aesthetic appeal as requested by the ward authority. The residents also refurbished the Bailey bridge in the ward.
Some concerned residents are proposing to place an agenda during the ward’s next general meeting scheduled for December end to adopt the same slogan for the next two years so as to implant the appreciation of “environment and aesthetics” as a habit-forming community practice.
Secretary of Salangtem Ward Authority, Lanuakum, conveyed thanks to all the residents of the ward as well as all the private and government institutions in the ward for their all out participation and support throughout the year. It may be mentioned that there are at least 1 GMS and two private HSSs, a private college, 6 government offices including the Power House, the PHED Pump House and the Town Health Sub Centre which makes Salangtem a prominent ward in Mokokchung town.
