KOHIMA, March 13 (NEPS): Former Chief Minister and Leader of Opposition TR Zeliang has said his Government had done its best to find a solution to the longstanding Naga political issue even to the extent of passing “resolutions” in the Assembly urging the Government of India to resolve the issue before the State General Elections or else defer the same till the issue is resolved.
Talking to reporters after the Assembly Session on Tuesday, the newly appointed Leader of Opposition in the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly said, “I think I, as Chief Minister, have done my best to bring all the Naga Political Groups together, to bring all the civil societies together for finding a permanent settlement of the Naga political issue.”
He said they had also gone to Delhi and met Central leaders urging them to resolve the Naga political issue before the elections. “Because the Government of India has already held several rounds of talks with NSCN (IM) and also with NPGs, besides announcing that the resolution to the issue is very near,” he added.
Now his political adversaries were talking negative on what they pressed on the Government of India for the “Solution before Election,” he stated. “I think if solution comes, peace will come in the North East.”
The Leader of Opposition also wondered whether all the initiatives taken by his Government would be misconstrued as “negative” by his political adversaries. He did not rule out his political adversaries’ nefarious games to weaken his political standing as could be seen from the series of summons issued to him and his previous CMO staffs by NIA for alleged payment to NSCN (K).
He disclosed how his Government took series of initiatives to bring NSCN (K), which walked away from the ceasefire with the Government of India in 2015, to the ceasefire fold for the resumption of peace process. They even sent leaders of Naga Hoho and Eastern Nagaland People’s Organization (ENPO) to Myanmar to meet the leaderships of NSCN (K) to convey the resolutions of the State Government and the desire of the Naga people that they should come back to the ceasefire fold for resumption of peace process with the Government of India, he added.
Zeliang also reiterated that though they were now in the Opposition, they would continue to play their role to see that the protracted Naga political issue was arrived at the earliest.
