The Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations (CoMSO) has decided to move the Supreme Court if the BJP led government at the centre forcefully implements the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).
The organisation after a meeting held in Shillong on December 7 observed that the Bill is not 100 per cent as the entire state of Meghalaya is not exempted.
“We will file a case in the Supreme Court requesting it to do away with CAB,” CoMSO leader Robertjune Kharjahrin told reporters.
Reposing faith on the apex court to protect the tribal rights he said, “The Supreme Court stands for justice while political parties stand for vote bank politics and political interest and sometimes forget the minority interest.”
Pointing out that the state has areas like the Cantonment Board, European ward, Revenue lands, and RR Colony, etc that don’t fall under the Sixth Schedule, Kharjahrin stated it will give rise to anarchy. “The Centre’s claim to exempt Meghalaya is fake, and we totally reject this partial exemption,” he added.
Stating that the organization rejects the CAB 2019 just like the CAB 2016 and the idea of CAB as a whole, he urged all political parties, NGOs and the public at large to join hands to oppose it.
Kharjahrin further said that the organisation will continue to demand implementation of the Inner Line Permit to regulate influx in the state.
The CoMSO has also offered its support to the North East Student’s Organisation (NESO) in its protest against the CAB.
Meanwhile, the organisation has decided to hold a protest programme from Monday against the delay of the Governor to give his assent to the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security (Amendment) Ordinance, 2019.
