Young boy from Nagaland to receive Nat’l Bravery Award

Thanghilmang Lunkim from Nagaland is among the 25 children from across India selected for the Indian Council for Child Welfare’s (ICCW) National Bravery Awards, to be presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 23. Lunkim, a class six student, had saved the life of another student after the latter had fallen into a river while crossing the Mezoma Bridge on September 15, 2015. While on his way from school, Lunkim saw the student being washed away by the force of the current, prompting him to jump into the river and save his life.  

In total, six bravehearts from the North East have been selected for the award. They include: Tarh Peeju (posthumously) of Arunachal Pradesh, Roluahpuii (posthumously) of Mizoram, Thanghilmang Lunkim of Nagaland, H Lalhriatpuii (posthumously) of Mizoram, Tankeswar Pegu of Assam, Moirangtham Sadananda Singh of Manipur. They will be honoured on January 26, 2017 in New Delhi on the occasion of India’s Republic Day.  

The National Bravery Awards are given to children between the ages of 6 and 18 every year. The recipients, selected from across India, are given a medal, certificate and a cash prize. They also receive financial assistance to complete their schooling.
