YouthNet enhances local construction workers

Kohima, May 25 (MExN): As a follow-up of the ‘Year of Construction Workers’ (YoCW), YouthNet conducted a one day orientation programme for construction workers under the theme ‘Enhancing our local skill workers’ on May 25 organized by YouthNet in Kohima.  

Gracing the programme Khotuo Sekhose, a Kohima based contractor addressed the opportunities and challenges in the construction sectors highlighting the importance of team work, integrity, patience, negotiating skills and market knowledge. He also shared the importance experience in starting small and moving up the ladder in this filed.  

Quoting ‘The more value you give to a customer the more value you receive’ he shared the importance of collaboration and following instructions and safety rules, in addition outlined the importance of labor rate management since the market unceasingly fluctuate one should also be dynamic with labor rates too. In making a comparison of locals and non-locals construction workers it was sighted that local lack of skills, experience, networking and not following up or marketing themselves to contractors.  

Lamenting on the benefits of several schemes and projects in construction sector James Kithan, Operations Manager for Skill Development at YouthNet highlighted various schemes for the local construction workers such as Social Security Schemes to the registered workers such as Tools Grant, Insurance Cover under Aam Admi Bima Yojana (AABY), Medical Assistance, Children Education allowance and Maternity benefit for the female registered workers and the wives of the registered workers. He also stated that in order to disseminate information’s to the unregistered workers, the Welfare Board conducts regular IEC activities throughout the State. He said the Department of Labour has been helping registered candidate with such benefits. One should also attend training programs not only for certificates but to learn the real skills.  

Lezo Putsure, Director YouthNet said the workers can register with DialNagaland, which is a one stop center for construction workers looking for work, and for customers looking for workers. He shared since the launch of DialNagaland which was supported by the Dept. of Skills, Employment and Entrepreneurship, Government of Nagaland. The venture has given work to more than 120 local workers and generated 15 lakhs for our construction workers.
