ZTYO supports demand to defer ULB elections

Zunheboto, January 24 (MExN): The Zunheboto Town Youth Organization (ZTYO) has expressed firm support to the Joint Coordination Committee’s (JCC) demand to defer urban local bodies’ (ULB) elections in the state.

In an appeal to the Nagaland State government, ZTYO stated that “going against the wishes of the people is a clear breakaway from the principles of democracy.”

Citing the example of NPF press statement which warned of “strict disciplinary actions” to its ticket holders should they withdraw nominations heeding the calls of their respective tribal organizations, ZTYO Media Cell stated that “a clear divisive policy being played is apparent now with several organizations excommunicating intending candidates of their community.”

ZTYO stressed it is imperative for the State government to initiate necessary consultative process involving all the stakeholders to ensure that certain amendments are made before the implementation, rather than adamantly forcing through the Nagaland Municipal Act 2001 against the wishes of its citizens.

Reiterating its stance on civic body elections, ZTYO reaffirmed that it will heed the call of Joint Coordination Committee to enforce an indefinite bandh within its jurisdiction should the state government fail to accept the people's appeal.

ZTYO also reminded the State government to abide by the Chief Minister's statement that “Elections would not be held in places where there is opposition.”

Affirming that it stands by the stance of its apex organization, Sumi Hoho, a co-organising member of Joint Coordination Committee, the youth organisation further warned that the State government will be held solely responsible if any untoward incident occurs during the enforcement of the bandh.
