Dimapur, November 29 (MExN): The Dimapur Police have re-imposed a speed limit along National Highway (NH) 29, covering the Purana Bazaar-Chümoukedima stretch as well as Dimapur city area for one month, stating that the majority of road traffic accidents are due to overspeeding.

"It has been observed that the majority of road traffic accidents are due to overspeeding, and sufficient grounds exist to restrict the speed of motor vehicles," stated Commissioner of Police Dimapur, Kevithuto Sophie, in a notification.

The speed limits will be enforced for a period of one month from December 1-31, the notification informed.

According to the notification, the speed limit from Zion Hospital Junction to Chümoukedima is fixed at 50 kilometres per hour (km/hr). The same limit has also been set for Chathe Bridge (Patkai/Seithekema) towards Niuland district.

Within the Dimapur city area, it will be 30 km/hr.

Driving at excessive speeds is a punishable offense and shall be strictly enforced under section 183 of the Motor Vehicles Act, it added. The Dimapur police had adopted similar measures intermittently in 2021 and 2022.
