Kohima, October 30 (MExN): The Angami Women Organisation (AWO) has condemned the reported rape and sexual abuse of a minor girl by her biological father in Kohima district, which allegedly resulted in her pregnancy, and called for stringent legal action against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.

In a condemnation note, the AWO described the incident as "an appalling crime and a grave violation of a child’s dignity, safety and fundamental rights." Expressing concern over the alleged abuse by a person entrusted with the child's care, the organisation stated that "a father is expected to be a source of love, protection and security," adding that "the betrayal of that trust in such a cruel and inhuman manner is deeply disturbing and unacceptable."

"No child should ever have to endure such trauma, especially at the hands of someone who is entrusted with her care and protection," the AWO stated, adding that "such heinous crime must be dealt with firmly under the law."

The organisation called upon the concerned authorities to ensure "a thorough and impartial investigation" and take "stringent legal action against the accused under the relevant provisions of the POCSO Act and other applicable laws so that justice is delivered without delay."

It also stressed the need to provide the minor with medical care, psychological counselling and all necessary support to help her recover from the experience. "Her privacy, dignity and identity must be protected at every stage," the AWO stated.

Calling for collective responsibility in protecting children, the organisation said society must "stand firmly against all forms of sexual violence that are on a steady rise" and "break the silence that often allows such crimes to remain hidden."

"Protecting children is a collective responsibility, and there can be no justification or tolerance for such heinous acts," it stated. The AWO added that "the survivor deserves compassion, justice and unwavering support, while the perpetrator must be held accountable for the crime."
