Lt Gen P C Nair, AVSM, YSM, Director General Assam Rifles (DGAR) today inaugurated Capt (Late) N Kenguruse Centre for Excellence and Wellness at HQ 5 Sector Assam Rifles, Chieswema, about 13 kilometres away from Kohima.

Captain N Kenguruse made the supreme sacrifice for the nation during the Kargil War of 1996. This Project has been initiated in his honour, said Lt Col Anoop Pandey, SC 2IC, 45 Assam Rifles.

This project is a noble initiative for the meritorious students of Nagaland by DGAR with the support of Axis Bank as corporate partner and National Integrity & Educational Development Organization (NIEDO) as training partner.

The project has been conceived by Assam Rifles to empower the youth of Nagaland through education and secure a better future for them.

The project has been conceptualized as a year-long residential coaching and mentoring facility for students from economically weaker and under-privileged sections of Nagaland for prestigious competitive examinations like NEET and JEE.

It may be mentioned that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Assam Rifles, Axis Bank & NIEDO was signed on May 13, 2022, starting off the arduous journey of selecting 30 meritorious students from the entire state of Nagaland.

The spade work of this project was started in 2020 by Brigadier Abhinav Gurha, then Commander of 5 Sector Assam Rifles.

Thereafter, Brigadier Herjinder Singh, present Commander of 5 Sector Assam Rifles took this project to finalization by signing MoU with Axis Bank and NIEDO.

Education- most potent force for social change
Inaugurating this Centre in the presence of several dignitaries and family members of Captain late Neikezhakuo Kengurüse (MVC), Lt Gen P C Nair maintained that “education is indeed the most potent force for social change.”

“It is an efficient instrument which can enrich the citizens with knowledge, skill, capacity and confidence. It gives children especially those who are disadvantaged, a chance at success which under normal circumstances they are deprived of,” he said adding that this project provides a stepping stone for these children to genuinely transform their prevailing circumstances and attempt a lead towards glory.

He thanked Rudrapriyo Ray, head of cooperate affairs Axis Bank and Dr Rohit Srivastava, CEO, NIEDO for joining hands with Assam Rifles for this noble initiative.

Lt Gen Nair stated said that Nagaland as a state has had certain impediments in terms of higher education due to its remoteness and societal challenges evolving out of insurgency.

“These impediments have prevented students to realize their aspirations and true worth,” he said adding that this project would be able to bridge this gap and provide students an opportunity to achieve their dreams and contribute positively to the society.

He highlighted that the mentoring will provide value-based education, including soft skill training, critical life competencies, leadership capabilities, personal conditioning, wellness programs, vocational training, personality development and end to end grooming to the selected students to help them in becoming a productive human resource for the nation.

Lt Gen Nair also felt the necessity to reach out to the remote areas of Nagaland.

Also speaking on the occasion, Maj Gen Vikas Lakhera, SM, Inspector General Assam Rifles (North) was optimistic that this project will provide a genuine opportunity for quality education to the selected children through specialized mentors.

This initiative will also set precedence for more such collaborations in future and would have a meaningful impact on the education rendered to the relatively weaker sections of the society, he added.

“The success, which we will achieve with this project, should be seen as a step in the direction of building a secure Nagaland, a prosperous North East and a peace loving India. It is necessary for us to look ahead and prepare for the future,” he added.
