Dimapur, August 25 (MExN): The Gorkha Youth Club Dimapur (GYCD) organised a voluntary blood donation camp at District Hospital Dimapur on August 25 to commemorate the death anniversary of Shaheed Major Durga Malla and honour the memory of Shaheed Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, Maha Vir Chakra (MVC).
Major Durga Malla, regarded as the first Gorkha freedom fighter of the Indian National Army (INA), was hanged by the British on August 25, 1944. Captain N Kengurüse, a Naga soldier, was killed in action during the 1999 Kargil War.
The programme was chaired by GYCD Advisor and Programme Coordinator Anand Gurung. Shikupu Zhimomi, General Secretary of the Business Consultancy Network, who represented its President Tungupu K Zhimomi, delivered the special address.
Zhimomi lauded the GYCD for its social initiatives and said blood donation was "the ultimate gift of life to society."
Dr Rongsenmar Longkumer, Consultant and In-charge of the Blood Bank at District Hospital Dimapur, spoke about the importance of voluntary blood donation and urged people to overcome common myths and fears surrounding the practice. He said individuals aged 18 and above who meet the prescribed medical fitness criteria can safely donate blood twice a year.
GYCD President Sumit Sunar said the initiative reflected the community's commitment to serving society and the nation. "The Gorkhas have always stood on the frontlines for the nation," he said, adding that the community remains ready to step forward whenever there is a need.
The blood donation drive was conducted under the supervision of the District Hospital Dimapur medical team. Around 12 to 15 units of blood had been collected at the time of compiling the report, according to the organisers.
