India-Nepal direct freight train marks milestone in rail connectivity

Maligaon, July 27 (MExN): The first direct commercial container freight train from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar Customs Yard in Nepal has successfully completed its journey, marking a major milestone in India-Nepal rail connectivity, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) said on Monday.

The train, comprising 40 wagons carrying a consignment of canola, operated under the revised India-Nepal Rail Transit Protocol, enabling direct rail movement of bulk cargo from Kolkata Port to Biratnagar without transshipment at the border. 

According to NFR, the new arrangement is expected to reduce transit time, lower logistics costs and minimise cargo handling while improving trade efficiency between the two neighbouring countries.
The development builds on the broad-gauge rail link between Jogbani in Bihar and Biratnagar in Nepal, inaugurated in June 2023 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the then Prime Minister of Nepal.

NFR said the commencement of direct commercial rail movement follows the signing of the revised Letter of Exchange between the two countries in November 2025.

Describing the development as a landmark for cross-border freight transportation, the railway said the initiative would strengthen international rail connectivity, boost bilateral trade and improve logistics efficiency.

The NFR said it will continue to strengthen cross-border rail connectivity, enhance freight logistics and support the growing trade and economic partnership between India and Nepal through efficient and reliable railway services.
