Assam’s Khumtai Warriors (Femina) secured a decisive 3-0 victory over host team Peren District Football Association (PDFA) Women FC in an exhibition match on August 8.
The Khumtai Warriors (Femina) produced a dominant performance to claim the victory. Despite a spirited effort and strong home crowd support, the Warriors’ defense remained resolute to keep a clean sheet, sealing a convincing win in this cross-border exhibition match.
Played at 3:00 pm at the Turf Ground in Jalukie Town, Peren District, the friendly match was organized by the PDFA.
The friendly encounter was aimed at providing vital match exposure to female players across Nagaland and Assam while elevating skill levels in the region, PDFA President RaithuNewmai told The Morung Express on Saturday.
“The community response to women football in Peren district has been always great. Even today in the exhibition match, huge crowd turned out to support both the teams,” Newmai shared.
Attending the match was Mrinal Saikia, MLA of Khumtai, Assam, who participated not in an official capacity as chief guest, but as the owner and patron of the victorious Khumtai Warriors team.
Having already established a men’s team, Saikia’s venture into women’s football marks a dedicated step toward expanding opportunities for female athletes in Assam. He encouraged the young players to strive for excellence, noting that while women’s football in the North East region has immense potential, there remains significant scope for growth and improvement. The MLA also extended an invitation to the Peren district women’s team to play a return fixture in Golaghat, Assam, Newmai shared.
The PDFA President formally welcomed the visiting squad and expressed deep appreciation for Saikia’s proactive initiative to give his players broader exposure by traveling to Nagaland. He highlighted how such fixtures serve a dual purpose of sharpening competitive skills on the pitch and building stronger community ties between neighboring states through sports.
On being asked about how active women’s football is in the Peren district, and what opportunities PDFA envisions following this event, Newmai stated that Peren currently stands out as the only district in Nagaland where a dedicated running women’s trophy is organized by the district football association, and added that the PDFA has been conducting regular coaching camps for the girls in the district. “Though there is no definite decision taken to make it a regular feature, PDFA will always continue to explore opportunities to provide more exposure to our district women players,” Newmai added.
